Atascosa County is located in the south-central part of the great state of Texas. Established in 1856, it was named after the Atascosa River, which means "boggy" or "wet" in Spanish. The county is part of the San Antonio-New Braunfels metropolitan area and has an estimated population of around 50,000 people.

In the early years, the Atascosa County region was home to numerous Native American tribes such as the Coahuiltecan, Lipan Apache, and Karankawa tribes. The Spanish began to explore the area in the late 17th and early 18th centuries, establishing missions along the Atascosa River. Mexico claimed the region after gaining independence from Spain in 1821, but Texas eventually won its independence in 1836 and incorporated the area into its newly independent republic.

The county officially came into existence on January 25, 1856, when it was carved out of Bexar County. The first county seat was Amphion, which was later replaced with Pleasanton in 1858. Agriculture and ranching played significant roles in the county's economy during its early years. Cattle ranching, in particular, thrived in this region and contributed to its growth.

One fun fact about Atascosa County is that it's referred to as the "birthplace of the cowboy." This region has a rich history of cattle ranching, which led to the development of cowboy culture in the late 19th century. The county also hosts the annual Cowboy Homecoming Festival in Pleasanton, celebrating its unique heritage and providing residents and visitors the opportunity to experience various cowboy-themed events and activities.
