Bandera County, located in the great state of Texas, was formed on January 26, 1856, and named after the Spanish word "bandera," meaning flag. With its county seat in the city of Bandera, it is part of the San Antonio Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area once belonged to the Comanche, Lipan Apache, and later, the Coahuiltecan Indians. In the 19th century, European settlers arrived, particularly socio-religious groups like the Mormons and the Polish.

One of the county's most significant historical moments occurred in 1841, when the Texas governor, Mirabeau Lamar, initiated the Texan Santa Fe Expedition. Although the expedition ultimately failed in establishing trade links with New Mexico, the events that transpired laid the groundwork for what would eventually become Bandera County. The area became known for ranching, farming, and lumbering industries, playing a vital role in the establishment of the Hill Country cattle industry.

A fun fact about Bandera County is that it is often referred to as the "Cowboy Capital of the World." It boasts a rich cowboy culture and Western heritage, with numerous dude ranches, rodeo events, and Western-themed festivals hosted throughout the year. This unique aspect of Bandera County attracts tourists interested in experiencing the authentic cowboy lifestyle.
