Bowie County is located in the northeastern corner of the state of Texas, bordering Arkansas to the north and Louisiana to the east. Established on December 18, 1840, it was named after James Bowie, a legendary hero of the Texas Revolution who died at the Battle of the Alamo. The county's population has grown continually since its inception and currently has over 90,000 residents, according to recent census data.

The principal town in Bowie County is Texarkana, which is split between Texas and Arkansas and shares a unique geographical and administrative relationship with its neighbor city, Texarkana, Arkansas. Consequently, the two Texarkanas make up the core of a larger metropolitan area that spans both states.

Throughout its history, Bowie County's economy has been primarily dependent on agriculture, with cotton and timber production dominating throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries. With time, the county diversified its economic base, with various industries, such as rail transportation and later the production of ammunition during World War II, playing significant roles in its development.

A fun fact about Bowie County is that during the era of Prohibition in the United States, the county's location made it a hub for illegal alcohol production and bootlegging. Its strategic location near the borders of multiple states allowed for easier smuggling of liquor across state lines.
