Brazoria County, located in the southeastern part of Texas, has a rich historical background dating back to the early 1800s. The county was formed on March 17, 1836, from a Mexican land grant given to Stephen F. Austin, who is recognized as the "Father of Texas." Austin, along with other empresarios, received land grants in the region and brought settlers from the United States, resulting in the treasured Anglo-American colonization of the state.

The County was named after the Brazos River, and the region witnessed significant historical events like the Battle of Velasco in 1832, which was an essential precursor to Texas gaining its independence from Mexico in 1836. Additionally, this County played a crucial role in the Texas Revolution, with several of its cities serving as temporary capitals of the fledgling Republic of Texas.

Brazoria County's economy originally relied on agriculture and, with its fertile soil, quickly became a leading producer of sugar and cotton. However, the discovery of oil in the early 20th century changed the economic landscape, making petroleum production a vital industry for the region.

Fun fact: The historic Levi Jordan Plantation, located in Brazoria County, is an archaeological site with a unique and well-preserved representation of life on a 19th-century Texas plantation. The site offers an insightful glimpse into the lives of the African American slaves who worked there before emancipation and their descendants' community that lived on the plantation grounds following the Civil War.
