Brewster County, located in the great state of Texas, boasts a rich and diverse history. Established in 1887 and named after Henry Percy Brewster, a former Secretary of War for the Republic of Texas, this expansive region covers an area of roughly 6,184 square miles, making it the largest county in Texas and the third-largest in the United States.

The area was first inhabited by various Native American tribes, including the Chisos, Mescalero Apache, and Jumano. Spanish explorers arrived in the 16th and 17th centuries, marking the beginning of European interaction with the region. Throughout the years, the region witnessed a variety of settlers, from Mexican farmers and ranchers to American and European adventurers.

In the late 1800s, Brewster County experienced significant growth following the establishment of the Galveston, Harrisburg, and San Antonio Railway. The creation of the railway brought settlers, businesses, and infrastructure to the area, shaping its development. The area's agricultural economy, primarily focused on cattle and sheep ranching, flourished with the addition of the railroad network. Later, the establishment of the Big Bend National Park in 1944 attracted even more visitors, contributing to the growth of the tourism industry.

One fun fact about Brewster County is that, in addition to its historical importance and agricultural roots, it is also home to the McDonald Observatory, one of the world's leading astronomical research facilities. The observatory, operated by the University of Texas at Austin, houses numerous telescopes and instruments used for astronomical research and is an important center for astronomical education and outreach in the United States.
