Calhoun County is located in the coastal region of the great state of Texas, USA. It was established in 1846, soon after Texas became part of the United States. The area has a diverse history, with its roots in Native American, Spanish, and Anglo-American settlements. The county was named after John C. Calhoun, a prominent politician and statesman from South Carolina, who served as the vice president of the United States.

The county's strategic position on the coast has contributed to its development, as it lies along important maritime routes. In the early years, the port city of Indianola, founded in 1846, was a gateway for European immigrants and one of the major Gulf Coast ports. Indianola tragically faced two powerful hurricanes in 1875 and 1886 which led to its abandonment, leaving Port Lavaca as the new county seat for Calhoun County at the intersection of key trade routes.

Calhoun County has a rich history in agriculture, with its fertile lands producing rice, corn, and cotton. The county is also known for its abundant fishing and shrimping industry, thanks in part to the numerous bays, waterways, and the Gulf of Mexico.

Fun Fact: Matagorda Island, which is located in Calhoun County, is an ecologically diverse and undeveloped barrier island that is home to a refuge for migratory birds and endangered species. The island has played significant roles in the history of the area, from housing a military installation during the Civil War to being a part of the failed French settlement of Champ d'Asile in 1818. Today, the island is a popular destination for nature enthusiasts due to its rich ecosystem with a variety of wildlife and picturesque landscapes.
