Carson County, located in the Texas Panhandle region, was established by the Texas Legislature on August 21, 1876, and named in honor of Samuel Price Carson, a young North Carolina congressman who fought for the independence of Texas. However, the area remained largely unsettled until the late 19th century. The population increased in the early 20th century with the arrival of the Chicago, Rock Island, and Gulf railroads, followed by the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe rail lines.

Panhandle, the county seat of Carson County, was founded in 1887 by a group of ranchers who won the town site in a poker game. The town grew rapidly, and by 1909 it had a public school system, a hospital, and several businesses. The discovery of oil and natural gas reserves in the 1920s and 1930s contributed significantly to the county's growth and development.

Agriculture and ranching played a crucial role in the county's economy from its earliest days, with wheat, corn, and cotton being the main crops. The county also became a significant producer of beef, which helped to shape the regional identity and culture.

One fun fact about Carson County is that it is home to the largest windmill museum in the United States, the American Windmill Museum, which features a variety of windmills from different periods and showcases the importance of wind power in the region's history.
