Castro County, located in the great state of Texas, has a rich history that dates back thousands of years. It is situated in the Texas Panhandle and covers an area of 899 square miles. The county was once inhabited by indigenous tribes, such as the Comanche, Kiowa, and Apache, who thrived in the region thanks to its fertile land and abundant resources.

In 1876, Castro County was officially established and named in honor of a Mexican soldier, entrepreneur, and statesman, Henri Castro, who played a significant role in the development of Texas. However, it wasn't until 1891 that the county was officially organized. Dimmitt, the county seat, was founded in the same year and named after a Texas state representative named Ephraim Dimmitt.

Throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries, cattle ranching and agriculture flourished in Castro County, as settlers were drawn to the area due to its fertile soil and ample land for population expansion. Cattle ranching, farming, and the arrival of railway networks significantly contributed to the county's economic growth and still play an essential role in the county's economy today.

A fun fact about Castro County is that it is known for being a significant producer of agricultural crops in the state of Texas, particularly corn, cotton, and wheat. Additionally, Castro County is home to the Ozark Trail, a series of historic trails that runs through the region, connecting the Ozarks in Missouri to the Rocky Mountains in New Mexico. This trail system was developed between 1913 and 1925 and contributed to the transportation and communication growth in the area.
