Childress County is located in the southeastern Panhandle region of Texas. Established on August 21, 1876, the county was named after George Campbell Childress, who was one of the primary authors of the Texas Declaration of Independence and a prominent lawyer in the Republic of Texas. Childress County covers approximately 792 square miles and is bordered by Collingsworth, Hall, Hardeman, and Cottle Counties.

Initially inhabited by Native American tribes such as the Comanche, Kiowa, and Apache, the region witnessed an influx of settlers in the late 19th century. The arrival of the Fort Worth and Denver City Railway in 1887 promoted the growth of families, businesses, and industries in the area. The city of Childress, established in 1887, serves as the county seat and remains the largest city in the county to date.

Agriculture is the primary economic driver in Childress County, with crops such as wheat, cotton, and corn being cultivated in the fertile land. The area is also known for ranching, raising cattle, and producing oil and natural gas.
