Colorado County is a historical region located in the great state of Texas. Established in 1837, it is situated in the southeastern part of the state and spans an area of approximately 974 square miles. The county was named after the Colorado River, which runs through its territory. The origin of the river's name is Spanish, meaning "colored" or "ruddy," which is a reference to its reddish silt-laden water.

The area now known as Colorado County was originally home to the Karankawa, Tonkawa, and Comanche Native American tribes. In the early 1820s, Anglo-American settlers from the United States began arriving as part of Stephen F. Austin's "Old Three Hundred" colony. They were followed by German immigrants in the 1830s, who played a significant role in shaping the county's culture.

The county seat is the city of Columbus, which has a rich history of its own. Founded in 1823 as Beeson's (or Beason's) Ferry, it played an important role as a crossing point on the Colorado River. Columbus is also known for its part in the Runaway Scrape, the mass evacuation of Texas settlements during the Texas Revolution in 1836.

One notable fun fact about Colorado County is its contribution to the growth of the cattle industry in the late 1800s. The GH&H Railroad, which connected Houston and San Antonio, ran through the county, making it a significant cattle-shipping point. As a result, Colorado County became a prosperous center for ranching and farming, with the cattle industry playing a prominent role in the region's economy up until the 20th century.
