Comal County, located in South Central Texas, was established on March 24, 1846. It was one of the original 23 counties created by the Texas State Legislature. The county is named after the Comal River, which flows through the region. In Spanish, "comal" means a flat dish or plate, inspired by the expansive limestone shelf along the river. The county occupies an area of 575 square miles and has New Braunfels as its county seat.

Before the establishment of Comal County, the area was inhabited by various Native American tribes, including the Tonkawa, Waco, Lipan Apache, and Comanche. In 1825, the Mexican government granted Anglo-American colonists permission to settle in the region, which led to the establishment of the Fisher-Miller Colony, a significant settlement for German immigrants in the 1840s.

Prince Carl of Solms-Braunfels played a pivotal role in the region's development as the commissioner-general of the Adelsverein, an organization that aimed to promote German colonization in Texas. New Braunfels, which became the county seat of Comal County, was founded by this German immigrant community in 1845, one year before the county's official establishment.

During the 19th and 20th centuries, the region's economy relied primarily on agriculture and livestock, with local crops including corn, wheat, oats, and cotton. In recent times, the county experiences economic growth with industries such as tourism, construction, and manufacturing becoming significant contributors to the local economy.

A fun fact about Comal County is that Schlitterbahn Waterpark and Resort, located in New Braunfels, is one of the most popular water parks in the United States. The park, which opened in 1979, is known for its unique attractions, such as the Boogie Bahn surf ride and the Master Blaster uphill water coaster.
