Cottle County is located in the great state of Texas, specifically in the north-central part of the state. The county was officially established on August 21, 1876, from parts of Fannin County. It was named in honor of George Washington Cottle, a hero of the Alamo and a soldier in the fight for Texas' independence from Mexico.

This region of Texas is primarily known for its agricultural production and ranching. Early settlers in the area were attracted by the ample grasslands, fertile soil, and availability of water. Throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Cottle County focused on cattle ranching, sheep, and goat farming. The introduction of windmills and barbed wire fences played essential roles in the expansion of ranching and settlement in the area.

Cotton farming, wheat, and sorghums emerged as significant crops in the 20th century, further driving the county's economy. The town of Paducah, named after Paducah, Kentucky, serves as the county seat and was established in 1884. As the largest town in the county, it remains an essential trade center for local agricultural products.

One fun fact about Cottle County is that the Matador Ranch, founded in 1882, was one of the earliest and largest ranches in the county, covering around 879,000 acres at its peak. The expansive ranch played a pivotal role in shaping the county's identity and economic growth.
