Crosby County, located in the great state of Texas, was established in 1876 and organized in 1886. Named after Stephen F. Crosby, the county covers an area of 902 square miles and has its seat in the city of Crosbyton. It lies within the High Plains region, which is characterized by rolling and relatively flat terrain, with elevations ranging from 2,800 to 3,200 feet.

The history of Crosby County can be traced back to thousands of years ago when indigenous people, including the Folsom and Clovis cultures, inhabited the region. The Spaniards, led by Francisco Vasquez de Coronado in 1541, were among the first Europeans to explore the area. Over the years, the region witnessed the passage of several expeditions, including those led by Jose de Mares in 1788 and Capt. Randolph B. Marcy in 1849.

In the late 19th century, white settlers began to inhabit the land, drawn by the promise of fertile soil and space for farming and ranching. The county experienced a significant population increase during the early 20th century, spurred by the expansion of the railroad system. This period saw extensive development in the region, including the construction of schools, churches, and businesses.

Throughout its history, the local economy has relied heavily on agriculture, particularly the production of wheat, cotton, and sorghum. The discovery of oil in 1948 brought a new industry to the county and provided a significant boost to the economy for many years. In recent years, the county has seen an increased focus on wind power as a renewable energy source.

A fun fact about Crosby County is that it is home to the Texas Plains Trail, an extensive network of highways that link 52 counties in the High Plains and Rolling Plains of Texas. This trail showcases the region's natural beauty and highlights the rich history of the area, with Crosby County playing an important role in sharing its story with visitors.
