Culberson County is located in the far western portion of the great state of Texas. It was officially established on March 10, 1911, and was named in honor of David B. Culberson, a prominent lawyer, and U.S. Congressman from Texas. The county covers an area of approximately 3,813 square miles and has its county seat in the town of Van Horn.

The region's early history can be traced back thousands of years, with evidence of Native American presence in the area dating back to the Archaic Period. Later, the county was part of the Spanish province of Nueva Vizcaya, and in 1821, it became part of Mexico when the country won independence from Spain. After the Texas Revolution in 1836, it was part of the Republic of Texas and later became part of the United States in 1845.

In the 19th and 20th centuries, Culberson County experienced growth due to the development of railroads and agriculture. Ranching and farming emerged as major industries, with cotton, alfalfa, pecans, and corn becoming significant agricultural products. The area also benefitted from the discovery of oil and the expansion of the transportation network during the 20th century.

A fun fact about Culberson County is that it houses the Guadalupe Mountains National Park, which contains the highest peak in Texas, Guadalupe Peak, reaching 8,749 feet above sea level. This park is popular among outdoor enthusiasts and offers various recreational activities like hiking, backpacking, camping, and bird watching. The park also has a vast array of flora and fauna, providing a unique experience for those who visit.
