Dallam County, located in the far northwestern tip of the great state of Texas, was founded in 1876 and organized in 1891. Named in honor of James Wilmer Dallam, a lawyer and newspaper publisher who advocated for the annexation of Texas to the United States, the county is part of the Texas Panhandle. The region was initially inhabited by Native American tribes, such as the Apache and the Comanche, which were later pushed out by European settlers in the 19th century.

The development of Dallam County was influenced by the arrival of the Fort Worth and Denver City Railway in the 1880s, followed by increasing ranching and farming activities, the latter primarily involving wheat, corn, and alfalfa. The incorporation of Dalhart, the county seat, in 1891 further contributed to Dallam County's growth, as did the expansion of additional railroads throughout the area.

One fun fact about Dallam County is that it houses the XIT Ranch, once the largest contiguous ranch in the world, which was established in the late 19th century. The ranch was created as part of a land grant from the Texas state government to the Capitol Freehold Land and Investment Company in exchange for funding the construction of the Texas State Capitol. The XIT Ranch eventually included around 3 million acres of land, extending across 10 counties in the Texas Panhandle. Today, the XIT Ranch is remembered with commemorations, museums, and the annual celebration of the XIT Rodeo and Reunion.
