Dawson County, located in the Western Texas region, was established on February 1, 1876. The county is named in honor of Nicholas Mosby Dawson, a soldier who fought and died during the Texas Revolution. The county has a rich heritage with a blend of Native American, Mexican, and European histories.

Before European settlements, the area was primarily inhabited by Native American tribes such as the Comanche, Kiowa, and Lipan Apaches. In the early 16th century, Spanish explorers conducted expeditions through the region, and by the 18th century, continuous Spanish presence in the area inherently led to conflicts with Native Americans.

Anglo-American settlers began to arrive in the area in the mid-19th century, and the first permanent settlement, known as "Lamesa", was established in 1902. The area experienced significant growth when railway lines were extended from Lubbock through Lamesa in 1910.

Agriculture played a significant role in the county's economy, primarily focused on cattle ranching and cotton farming. The discovery of oil in 1940 further boosted the local economy, leading to a rapid increase in population and industrial development during the 20th century.

Fun fact: Dawson County was the setting for the 1956 movie "Giant," starring Elizabeth Taylor, Rock Hudson, and James Dean. The film was shot in and around the town of Lamesa and the county itself, which added to the area's popularity and cultural richness.
