Deaf Smith County is located in the Panhandle region of Texas, and it was created on August 21, 1876, from Bexar County as part of Texas state efforts to establish local governments in the area. The county is named in honor of Erastus "Deaf" Smith, a partially deaf scout and soldier who served during the Texas Revolution and was instrumental in the success of Texan forces.

Though the county was created in 1876, it wasn't until the arrival of the Pecos and Northern Texas Railway in 1898 that significant settlement began. This railway development attracted people who established farms and ranches throughout the area. Hereford, the county seat, was founded in 1899 and grew rapidly as a trade and shipping center. The city of Hereford was named after the famous Hereford cattle breed, which was introduced to the area in the early 19th century and thrived in the local climate.

Agriculture has been the main driver of Deaf Smith County's economy since its foundation, with major crops including wheat, corn, and hay. The county has also been known for its dairy and beef cattle industries, which continue to play a significant role in the economy today. Deaf Smith County has been called the "Beef Capital of the World."

One fun fact about Deaf Smith County is that it is considered to be the geographical center of the Texas Panhandle. With its rich history and agricultural significance, Deaf Smith County remains an important part of the Great State of Texas.
