Donley County is located in the Texas Panhandle region in the great state of Texas. Established on August 21, 1876, the county was named after Stockton P. Donley, a Texas Supreme Court Justice and an attorney in the Republic of Texas. Clarendon, the first established town in the Texas Panhandle, serves as the county seat of Donley County.

The region was primarily inhabited by Native American tribes, such as the Comanche and Kiowa, prior to European settlement. In the 1870s, Charles Goodnight, a pioneer American cattleman, established the first cattle ranch-JA Ranch-in the Texas Panhandle, which is partially located in Donley County. It covers 450,000 acres and played a pivotal role in the area's development.

As for transportation, the Fort Worth and Denver Railway made its way through Donley County in 1887, boosting its economic growth and population influx. Agriculture and ranching have been the mainstays of the county's economy since its inception, with corn and wheat being the primary crops.

A fun fact about Donley County is that it is home to the Saints' Roost Museum, which showcases the history of the county and the Texas Panhandle. The museum's name was inspired by the vigilant efforts of the Methodist Church's early settlers to enforce law and order in Clarendon, which was then known as a "Saints' Roost" due to their influence.
