Duval County is a county located in the southern part of the state of Texas. Established in 1858, it was named after Burr H. Duval, a captain in the Texas Revolution who fought alongside legendary Texan Jim Bowie at the Battle of Concepcion and the Siege of Bexar. The county was created from parts of Live Oak, Nueces, and Starr counties.

Throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Duval County played a significant role in the ranching industry, with vast expanses of land used for cattle grazing. The King Ranch, one of the most famous and extensive ranches in Texas, partially extended into Duval County. Additionally, the county became a hub for railroad transportation as the San Antonio and Aransas Pass Railway was constructed through the area in the 1880s.

In the early 1900s, Duval County was a hotbed for political corruption and organized crime under the reign of political boss Archer "Archie" Parr. Several dramatic events took place, including the imprisonment and subsequent release of Parr, as well as dueling, bribery, and other illicit activities. The influence of this tumultuous period earned the county the nickname "The Free State of Duval."

Here's a fun fact about Duval County: The county boasts excellent opportunities for birdwatching and wildlife observation, especially in the San Diego Mesteno Wildlife Management Area. The region is home to a significant population of white-tailed deer, as well as other wildlife such as javelinas (a type of peccary or skunk pig), bobcats, and various bird species.
