Eastland County is located in central Texas and was officially formed on February 1, 1858, from Bosque and Coryell Counties. The county was named after William Mosby Eastland, a soldier and a Texas Ranger who was part of the fight for Texas independence. The county seat is the city of Eastland. The region spans approximately 932 square miles and is known for its ranching, farming, and oil production.

In the early years, Eastland County's population and economy were primarily influenced by agriculture and cattle raising. The arrival of the railroad in 1881 spurred economic growth by connecting the county to major markets and attracting settlers. The beginning of the 20th century saw oil discoveries in the county, leading to an oil boom and a rapid increase in population, notably in Ranger, Eastland, and Cisco.

During the first half of the 20th century, agriculture remained a major economic factor, but the role of the oil industry became increasingly relevant. Over the years, Eastland County has experienced times of economic prosperity and decline, reflective of fluctuations in the oil industry. Today, the local economy continues to rely on a mix of agriculture, along with oil and gas production.

A fun fact about Eastland County involves the story of "Old Rip," a horned toad that allegedly survived 31 years sealed inside the cornerstone of the Eastland County Courthouse. When the courthouse was demolished in 1928, the cornerstone was opened, and the horned toad was found alive. It later died and was embalmed, and Old Rip can still be seen on display at the Eastland County Courthouse today. This incident has given rise to the annual Rip's Ribs Cook-Off, a popular event in the county.
