El Paso County is situated in the westernmost region of the great state of Texas. Established in 1850, it borders the states of New Mexico and Chihuahua, Mexico, making it a crucial intersection for trade and travel in the southwest. El Paso County covers an area of approximately 1,013 square miles and has a population of over 800,000 residents.

The area's history dates back thousands of years, with native tribes such as the Manso, Suma, and Jumano inhabiting the region prior to European exploration in the 16th century. Spanish conquistadors, including Juan de Onate, explored the area in search of the legendary Seven Cities of Gold in 1598. As a result, El Paso became a significant resting point along the Camino Real de Tierra Adentro, a trade route between Mexico City and present-day Santa Fe, New Mexico.

Throughout the 1800s, both Mexico and the United States laid claim to the region, but with the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo in 1848, the United States officially acquired the territory as part of Texas. The county seat, also called El Paso, played a critical role during the Mexican-American War and the American Civil War, as it was a key transportation hub for both governments.

El Paso's economy originally flourished due to agriculture, mining, and transportation. The arrival of the railroad in the 1880s further stimulated growth and made the region a center for trade and manufacturing. The city experienced population booms during World War I and World War II, with the establishment of military installations like Fort Bliss.

Today, El Paso County is a diverse and thriving region known for its strong military presence, unique culture influenced by both Mexican and American traditions, and growing business sector.

Fun fact: El Paso County is home to the first international border crossing of its kind - the Paso Del Norte International Bridge, which connects El Paso, Texas, to Ciudad Juarez, Mexico. This bridge was inaugurated in 1967 and serves as a symbol of peace and friendship between the two countries.
