Ellis County, situated in the great state of Texas, was formally established on December 20, 1849, and named in honor of Richard Ellis, the president of the Texas Declaration of Independence Convention. The county occupies a total area of 952 square miles and is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington Metropolitan Statistical Area.

Prior to the arrival of Anglo-Americans, Ellis County was inhabited by indigenous tribes such as the Tonkawa, Waco, and Wichita. The first Anglo-American settler, Empresario Peters, arrived in the county in 1843 under the auspices of the Peters Colony Land Grant Company. The settlers established a robust agricultural and livestock economy.

During the Reconstruction era, Ellis County's economy shifted towards cotton cultivation, becoming the top producer in the state by the end of the 19th century. It also developed into a transportation hub with the arrival of several railroad lines in the late 1800s. Throughout the 20th century, the economy diversified to include manufacturing, finance, and other industries.

One fun fact about Ellis County is that it is home to the historic couple Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow, infamous for their bank robberies and crime spree during the Great Depression. They are commonly referred to as Bonnie and Clyde.
