Floyd County is located in the Panhandle region of Texas and was officially established on August 21, 1876. Its county seat is Floydada, which is a combination of the names Floyd and Ada (the first names of the county's founder's parents). The county was initially named after Dolphin Ward Floyd, a soldier and defender of the Alamo.

The area was initially inhabited by Native Americans, including the Plains Apache, Comanche, and Kiowa tribes, before European settlement began. During the 16th and 17th centuries, Spanish explorers and missionaries passed through and documented the region. However, it was not until the 19th century that the area's settlement began in earnest. In the late 1800s and early 1900s, agriculture became central to the economy of the county, particularly the cultivation of cotton.

One fun fact about Floyd County is that it is nicknamed the "Pumpkin Capital" of Texas, as 17% of the state's pumpkins are grown in the area. Floydada even holds an annual Floydada Pumpkin Festival in celebration of pumpkin harvest each autumn.
