Freestone County is located in the eastern part of the great state of Texas. It was officially established in 1851 from portions of Limestone County. The county was named after freestone water, referring to the pure and soft water found in the creeks of the area. The county seat is Fairfield, a small, charming Texan town known for its warm hospitality.

Initially settled by European-Americans in the 1830s, the region's fertile soil attracted farmers, who cultivated cotton, corn, wheat, and other crops. The arrival of the Houston and Texas Central Railway in 1870 and the International-Great Northern Railroad in the early 1900s contributed greatly to the county's economic growth, connecting it with larger markets and population centers.

A significant part of Texas history, Freestone County saw the construction of the Trinity and Brazos Valley Railway in the early 20th century. The railroad, also known as the "Boll Weevil Line," was vital for linking Freestone County to the rest of Texas.

One fun fact about Freestone County is that it served as the filming location for portions of the 1985 film "Places in the Heart," starring Sally Field. The film, centered around the life of a widow in Texas during the Great Depression, won two Academy Awards and put Freestone County on the map.

Today, people are drawn to attractions in Freestone County such as Fairfield Lake State Park, which offers a variety of recreational activities like fishing, boating, and birdwatching. The area's rich history and natural beauty make Freestone County a unique part of Texas' past and present.
