Frio County, located in the great state of Texas, was officially established on March 24, 1858. The region was originally inhabited by Native American tribes, including the Coahuiltecan and Lipan Apache peoples, before European exploration and settlement in the 18th century. With the arrival of Spanish explorers, the area soon became a part of Nuevo Santander, a Spanish colony controlled by Jose de Escandn. Frio County was later included in the Mexican state of Tamaulipas after Mexico gained independence from Spain in 1821.

Following the Mexican-American War (1846-1848), this area became part of Texas and subsequently the United States. The county was formed from portions of Bexar, Atascosa, and Uvalde Counties, and its name is derived from the Frio River, which runs through the region. Frio, meaning "cold" in Spanish, refers to the cool and refreshing nature of the river.

Over the years, Frio County experienced a boom in population with the advent of the railroad in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, making it a vital transport hub. The economy of the region was primarily driven by agriculture, with cotton, cattle, and goats being significant income sources.

A fun fact about Frio County is that it was once considered part of the Wild West, a region known for its outlaws and adventure. One of the famous residents of Frio County was "Texas" John Slaughter, a celebrated lawman and gunslinger who served as sheriff in the area. Slaughter was known for his relentless pursuit of criminals and his ability to stay alive in a dangerous environment, earning him the nickname "Toughest Sheriff in Texas."
