Glasscock County, located in the great state of Texas, was established on January 26, 1887. The county's land area spans 901 square miles and is situated within the western part of the Edwards Plateau. The county was named in honor of George Washington Glasscock, a Texas pioneer, trader, and state legislator.

The region around Glasscock County initially attracted Native American tribes like the Comanches and Apaches. By the late 1600s, the Spaniards traversed this area while traveling between San Antonio and points in New Mexico. Prior to settlement, the region was mostly comprised of grassland and savannas, which supported a diverse ecosystem.

The first permanent settlers arrived in the 1880s, mainly consisting of ranchers and farmers who raised livestock and cultivated crops like cotton and corn. Throughout the years, the economy revolved around agriculture, ranching, and oil production, with the discovery of oil in the 1940s and 1950s leading to a boom in the industry.

The county seat is Garden City, which was platted in 1886 by founding father A.J. Reed. As the area developed, the population steadily increased, with the 2020 US Census estimating around 1,460 residents.

Fun Fact: Glasscock County is one of the few Texas counties to have remained completely dry, meaning that the sale and distribution of alcohol within its borders are restricted. This status has been maintained since the county's establishment in 1887.
