Gray County is located in the Panhandle region of Texas and was created from Bexar County in 1876. It was named in honor of Peter W. Gray, a prominent lawyer, judge, and Texan state legislator. The county was organized in 1902, and Pampa became the county seat.

The region was initially inhabited by Native American tribes such as the Comanche and Kiowa. In the late 19th century, ranching and the cattle industry became prevalent in the area, as did farming with the development of the Panhandle and Santa Fe Railway in the early 20th century. This railway played a crucial role in transforming the county's economy and attracting settlers to the region.

In the 1920s, the discovery of natural gas and oil deposits also contributed to the growth and prosperity of Gray County. The oil boom continued through the mid-20th century, further boosting the economy and population.

Fun fact: The Worley-Luginbuel House, located in Pampa, Gray County, is a historic landmark built in 1908 by David C. Worley. Worley was a prominent businessman in Pampa who contributed to the development of the city in the early 20th century. The house is recognized for its Queen Anne architectural style and has been preserved as a heritage site.
