Gregg County, located in the eastern part of the great state of Texas, was established in 1873. This county was carved out of portions of Rusk and Upshur Counties and was named in honor of John Gregg, a Confederate general and hero of the Civil War. The county seat is Longview, which is also the largest city in the region.

Originally, the area had a thriving economy based on agriculture, primarily cotton, and was known for production of significant amounts of naval stores including timber, resin, and turpentine from the abundant pine forests. The discovery of oil in the early 20th century, particularly during the 1930s, made Gregg County an important center for the petroleum industry, transforming the economy as well as the population. This period resulted in the boomtown growth of cities such as Kilgore, which experienced an exponential increase in population and urban development.

The county has a rich cultural and historical heritage, demonstrated by various landmarks, museums, and cultural centers. Notably, the Gregg County Historical Museum showcases the area's history and important artifacts of local and national significance.

Fun fact: A unique and well-attended annual event in Gregg County is the Great Texas Balloon Race, which has been held in Longview since 1978. This hot air balloon race attracts pilots from all over the world and is a colorful and exciting celebration that showcases the spirit and charm of this region in the great state of Texas.
