Grimes County, located in the southeastern part of the great state of Texas, was established originally as a part of Montgomery County on April 6, 1846. It was named in honor of Jesse Grimes, a signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence and one of the early leaders of the Texas Revolution. The county seat, Anderson, was named after Kenneth Lewis Anderson, Vice-President of the Republic of Texas.

In its early history, Grimes County was inhabited by native tribes such as the Bidai and Akokisa. The first European settlers arrived in the 1820s as part of Stephen F. Austin's 'Old Three Hundred', receiving land grants from the Mexican government. The county continued to grow through the years, with agriculture playing a significant role in the region's economy. Cotton production was especially dominant during the 19th and early 20th centuries.

Grimes County also played a role in the Civil War, providing troops, supplies, and resources to the Confederate cause. After the war, the region continued to develop with the arrival of the railroad in the 1850s, providing additional connections to other parts of Texas and the nation, boosting the county's economy.

One fun fact about Grimes County is that it is home to the historic Horlock House in Navasota, a unique Victorian-style residence dating back to the late 19th century. The house, now operating as an art gallery and history museum, once served as a boarding house for railroad workers and travelers passing through the area.
