Harris County, located in the great state of Texas, was founded on December 22, 1836, and was named in honor of John Richardson Harris. Harris was an early settler in the region who established a settlement called Harrisburg in 1826 that eventually became part of the city of Houston. Harris County served as the site for the initial capital of the Republic of Texas in 1836, and later, the burgeoning city of Houston developed as the county seat.

Harris County's geographical position along the Gulf of Mexico coastline led to an advantageous economic position, which grew rapidly due to developments such as the Houston Ship Channel and the Texas oil boom. Its close proximity to fertile lands in the region enabled agriculture to flourish, and the county's population expanded exponentially. Throughout the 20th century, Harris County continued to develop, diversifying its economy to encompass industries such as energy, petrochemicals, aerospace, and healthcare.

A fun fact about Harris County is that it contributed significantly to the history of human space exploration. The county is home to the Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center, which is NASA's principal center for human spaceflight training, research, and flight control. Launched in 1961, the space center played a crucial role in the historic Apollo 11 mission in 1969, during which Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin became the first humans to walk on the Moon.
