Hartley County is a county located in the great state of Texas, specifically in the Texas Panhandle region. It was created on August 21, 1876, from the Bexar County, but its government was not organized until February 9, 1891. The county was named in honor of Oliver C. Hartley and his brother, Rufus K. Hartley, two early Texas legislators and legal scholars.

The county seat is Channing, a small town in the southwestern part of the county. Before Channing became established as the county's major settlement, Hartley, a town near the center of the county, had initially been the focal point for the area.

The region was initially inhabited by native tribes like the Comanche and Kiowa, but with the arrival of European settlers and the growth of the cattle industry in the late 19th century, native populations dwindled as settlers claimed the land for farming and ranching. The county began to develop following the establishment of the Fort Worth and Denver Railway in 1888, which facilitated transportation and trade.

Hartley County has a rich ranching and agricultural history, with farming and cattle rearing being the main economic drivers. Significant events include the establishment of the XIT Ranch, once one of the largest ranches in the world, spanning millions of acres across Texas. The ranch was created in exchange for funding the construction of the Texas State Capitol in Austin in the 1880s. Today, the XIT Ranch no longer exists as a dividing up of the property occurred in the early 20th century, but its legacy is celebrated every year in the neighboring city of Dalhart with the "XIT Rodeo and Reunion," a fun fact about the region.

Furthermore, Hartley County is also known for its thriving natural gas industry, which contributes substantially to the area's economy. This rural region boasts a rich heritage and an enduring connection to its agricultural and ranching roots.
