Hays County, located in the great state of Texas, is a region with a rich historical background. Established in 1848, the county was named after Captain John Coffee Hays, a Texas Ranger and military officer. Situated along the beautiful Texas Hill Country and covering nearly 680 square miles, Hays County is part of the larger Austin-Round Rock Metropolitan Area.

European settlement in the area began in the early 19th century with Spanish explorers traveling through the region. The first non-Native American settlers arrived in the mid-1830s and established a small community called Mountain City. The county seat, San Marcos, was founded in 1851, and it is known for being one of the oldest continuously inhabited sites in America.

Hays County has experienced significant growth and development over the years, with its population expanding from around 1,000 inhabitants in 1850 to over 230,000 as of 2020. The county has a diverse economy, fueled by industries such as agriculture, manufacturing, education, and technology. It is also home to Texas State University, which plays an essential role in the community's cultural and educational development.

One fun fact about Hays County is that it houses the Aquarena Center, located on Spring Lake in San Marcos. The center was once a popular amusement park in the 1950s through the 1990s, known as Aquarena Springs. It gained fame for its mermaid shows, submarine theater, and a swimming pig named Ralph who performed in an act called "Ralph the Swimming Pig Show." Today, the Aquarena Center operates as an educational facility focused on environmental sustainability and the preservation of the unique ecosystem of San Marcos Springs.
