Hockley County, located in the great state of Texas, was created on August 21, 1876, from Bexar County and organized in 1921. It lies in the southern part of the Texas Panhandle and the High Plains of Texas. Covering an area of 909 square miles, Hockley County is named after George Washington Hockley, a Secretary of War for the Republic of Texas and an officer in the Texas Army during the Texas Revolution.

Levelland, established in 1912, serves as the county seat of Hockley County. The development of the county began when the first settlers arrived in the 1890s. Initially, the economy relied on ranching and farming, with cattle and sheep ranching making their mark in the county's history. The area experienced significant growth with the construction of a branch of the Santa Fe Railroad, which connected the town of Whiteface with Lubbock, in 1925.

Agriculture has always played a vital role in the county's economy. Hockley County is renowned for its cotton production, consistently ranking among the top cotton-producing counties in Texas. The introduction of irrigation systems during the 20th century immensely improved farming in the region. Other agricultural products include sorghum, peanuts, and wheat. Additionally, the discovery of oil in the 1930s contributed to the diversification of the economy.

As for a fun fact, Hockley County has a unique artistic connection. In 1969, the citizens of Levelland created an event called the "World's Largest Mural" by painting a series of linked farm scenes on a cotton trailer. This highlights the creativity and love for the arts among residents in the county.
