Houston County, located in the great state of Texas, was founded on June 12, 1837, making it the first county established by the Republic of Texas. Situated in East Texas, Houston County covers a total area of 1,234 square miles. Its administrative seat and largest city is Crockett, named after the famous frontiersman Davy Crockett, who lost his life during the Battle of the Alamo in 1836.

The county is endowed with rich history, having been inhabited by Caddo and Bidai Native American tribes before European settlement took place in the early 19th century. In the 1820s, Mexican land grants opened the area to settlers, attracting a significant number of Europeans from the Southern United States. Houston County played a pivotal role in Texas' efforts for independence from Mexican rule.

Agriculture and industries - including lumber, livestock, and oil - have been instrumental in the county's economic development. The arrival of the Houston and Texas Central Railway in 1872 helped spur economic growth and linked Houston County to other parts of the state.

A fun fact about Houston County is that it is home to the Texas State Railroad, which is one of the nation's most extensive and prominent steam train systems. The railroad was initially built for steam-powered transport of timber, but it has now become a prime tourist attraction, offering nostalgic rides on vintage steam and diesel locomotives through the scenic Piney Woods region of East Texas.
