Irion County is located in the western region of the great state of Texas. It was originally created on February 1, 1889, by the Texas Legislature out of the western part of Tom Green County. It is named in honor of Robert Anderson Irion, a prominent politician and physician who served as the Secretary of State for the Republic of Texas from 1838 to 1839.

The county seat, Mertzon, was established in 1911 when the Kansas City, Mexico, and Orient Railway extended its lines into the area. The economy of Irion County has predominantly been based on ranching and agriculture, with sheep and cattle ranching being particularly important.

In the twentieth century, the discovery of oil and natural gas reserves brought prosperity and growth to the region. The natural resources sector, including oil and gas extraction, continues to play a significant role in Irion County's economy.

A fun fact about this region is that Irion County is known as one of the smallest counties in Texas by population, highlighting its rural character and tight-knit communities.
