Jasper County is located in the Deep East region of Texas and was established on December 3, 1836. This county is named after Sergeant William Jasper, a Revolutionary War hero who gained recognition for his bravery during the Siege of Savannah.

Initially, Jasper County was home to several Native American tribes, including the Atakapan and the Alabama-Coushatta. European settlement in the region began in the early 19th century, predominantly by Anglo-American pioneers coming from the southern United States. The growth of the county was spurred by the establishment of trading posts and land grants by Mexican authorities.

During the Texas Revolution, Jasper County was the site of several military engagements, including the Battle of Bessie Heights in 1836. Following Texas' admission into the United States in 1845, the county experienced an economic boom from cotton farming and the growth of industries like sawmilling and farming.

The 20th century saw a steady decline in the county's population, but the development of outdoor recreational opportunities, such as fishing and boating at Sam Rayburn Reservoir, has brought an influx of tourists in recent years.

A fun fact about Jasper County is that it is home to the famous Martin Dies, Jr. State Park. Located along the shores of the Steinhagen Reservoir, this park offers activities for nature-lovers, such as boating, fishing, hiking, and birdwatching, attracting tourists and outdoor enthusiasts from around the country.
