Jeff Davis County, located in the great state of Texas, was established on March 15, 1887. It was named in honor of Jefferson Davis, the president of the Confederate States of America during the American Civil War. The county is situated in the Trans-Pecos region of far-west Texas and its county seat is located in Fort Davis, a former military post of the United States Army.

The area that is now Jeff Davis County has a rich history dating back to prehistoric times, with evidence of Native American occupation in the region. It was later explored by the Spanish as early as the 16th century, leading to the establishment of settlements and missions. The United States acquired the land as part of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo in 1848, which ended the Mexican-American War.

In the 1800s, the region became an important transportation route connecting San Antonio to El Paso, and the military established Fort Davis in 1854 to protect travelers from Native American raids. The fort was abandoned during the Civil War but was later reoccupied and played a significant role in the later Indian Wars before it was decommissioned in 1891.

Ranching and agriculture have always been significant economic activities in Jeff Davis County. While the county had a small population during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, it has evolved into a thriving community with a focus on tourism, mainly centered around the Fort Davis National Historic Site and the Davis Mountains State Park.

One fun fact about Jeff Davis County is that it is home to the McDonald Observatory, an astronomical observatory owned and operated by the University of Texas at Austin.
