Jones County, located in the North Central region of Texas, was established in 1858 and formed from parts of Bexar and Bosque counties. The county, named after Anson Jones, the last president of the Republic of Texas, was organized in 1881. Anson Jones was a notable figure who played a vital role in the annexation of Texas into the United States in 1845.

The region was initially inhabited by native tribes such as the Comanche, Wichita, and Delaware Indians. The first European exposure in the region began in the early 18th century due to exploratory expeditions. The later part of the 19th century witnessed the arrival of settlers, and the growth of the cattle and ranching industry. The introduction of the Texas and Pacific Railway in the 1880s further facilitated the growth and development of Jones County.

Agriculture became an important aspect of the local economy, and Jones County emerged as a leader in the production of cotton, peanuts, dairy products, and cattle. Water conservation projects significantly contributed to the expansion of agriculture and diversification into other crops such as wheat, sorghum, and vegetables.

A fun fact about Jones County is that the Fort Phantom Hill, a historic military fort from the mid-19th century, is located near the county's present-day city of Abilene. The fort was active between 1851-1854, and the site is now preserved as a remnant of Texas' frontier past, attracting history buffs and tourists alike.
