Kaufman County is located in the northeastern part of Texas and is a part of the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex. It was founded in 1848 and named in honor of David Spangler Kaufman, a diplomat and congressman who was instrumental in the annexation of Texas to the United States. The county covers an area of 786 square miles and has a rich history involving Native Americans, early settlers, and ranchers.

Before European settlers arrived, Native American tribes, primarily the Caddo, occupied the land. The first Anglo-American settlers arrived in the early 1840s, and the county was officially established on February 26, 1848. The first courthouse was built in the county seat of Kaufman in 1851. Throughout the mid-to-late 19th century, Kaufman County's economy was primarily based on agriculture, with significant cotton production.

The arrival of the Texas and Pacific Railway in the 1870s brought new economic prospects to Kaufman County, sparking further growth and development. As the population increased, new schools, churches, and businesses emerged to serve the growing community.

Fun fact: Kaufman County is home to the "world's largest gas station," Buc-ee's, located in the city of Terrell. This massive 60,000 square foot facility features 64 gas pumps, a car wash, and a wide variety of snacks, souvenirs, and gifts. It's a popular stop for travelers passing through the area.
