Kinney County is located in the southwestern part of Texas and was founded on January 25, 1850. The county was named in honor of Henry Lawrence Kinney, an early Texas settler, land speculator, soldier, and politician. The original inhabitants of the region were Native American tribes such as the Lipan Apache, Comanche, and Mescalero Apaches.

During the 17th and 18th centuries, the area was explored by Spanish missionaries, and they established several missions, including the famous San Felipe del Rio. Later on, as Texas became part of the United States, settlements began to appear throughout the region.

In 1870, the first railroad arrived in Kinney County, the Galveston, Harrisburg, and San Antonio Railway. Its construction led to the establishment of Brackettville as the county seat in 1873, replacing Fort Clark. The arrival of the railroad prompted a boom in the local economy and population.

Throughout its history, Kinney County has been shaped by cattle ranching, farming, military establishments, and tourism. Natural attractions like the Seminole Indian Scout Cemetery and Fort Clark Springs provide visitors with unique insights into the history and culture of this fascinating region.

Fun fact: Kinney County holds an interesting piece of history with the nearby "Alamo Village," a full-scale replica of the Alamo Mission in San Antonio. It was built for the 1960 film "The Alamo," directed by and starring John Wayne. The village has served as a location for multiple films and television shows and was once a popular tourist attraction, although it is now closed to the public.
