Lampasas County, located in the great state of Texas, has a rich and fascinating history. Established in 1856, the county got its name from the Lampasas River, which in turn derived its name from the Spanish word "lampazos," referring to a type of water lily found in the area. The county seat is the city of Lampasas.

Before the arrival of Europeans, the area was inhabited by Native American tribes such as the Apache and Comanche. The first European settlers arrived in the region in the 1840s and 1850s, attracted by fertile land and abundant water resources. It was during that time that Lampasas County became one of the earliest centers of agriculture and cattle ranching in Texas.

In the late 19th century, the region grew in importance due to the Sulphur Springs, a group of natural springs with mineral-rich waters. People flocked to Lampasas County to experience the supposed health benefits from these springs, which led to the development of the vibrant resort town of Lampasas. The local economy flourished as businesses, including hotels, bathhouses, and sanatoriums, were established to cater to the growing number of visitors seeking the healing waters. The springs' popularity earned Lampasas the nickname "Saratoga of the South."

Throughout the 20th century, Lampasas County continued to expand with the development of new industries, infrastructure, and agriculture. Today, it remains a popular destination for both residents and tourists, boasting a unique blend of natural beauty and American history.

One fun fact about Lampasas County is that the famous American outlaw, Scott Cooley, once served as a lawman within the region in the 1870s. However, disagreements between local law enforcement led to a series of violent events known as the "Hoodoo War" or "Lampasas County War," in which Cooley played a prominent role before becoming an outlaw.
