Leon County is located in the eastern part of the great state of Texas. The county was officially established in 1846, following the annexation of Texas to the United States. It is named in honor of Martin De Len, a Mexican empresario from the early 19th century who established one of the oldest European settlements in the region. The county seat is Centerville.

Originally, the area was inhabited by Native American tribes such as Bidai, Coushatta, and Kickapoo. European settlers began to arrive in the early 1800s, attracted by the region's rich soil and timber resources. Cotton farming became a primary economic activity, and with the arrival of the Houston and Texas Central Railway in the mid-19th century, the county's population and agricultural output continued to grow.

During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Leon County saw a shift from cotton farming to livestock and more diversified agriculture. Oil discoveries in the mid-20th century also contributed to the local economy. Today, the region has a diverse economic landscape that includes agriculture, manufacturing, and services.

Fun fact: Leon County is known for its abundance of historical sites, with over 50 locations listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Of particular note is the historic Carnegie Library in Centerville, which was built in 1909 and is one of only 32 original Carnegie Libraries remaining in Texas.
