Mason County, located in the heart of Texas, was officially established on January 22, 1858, and was named in honor of Fort Mason, which itself was named after General Richard Barnes Mason, a hero in the Mexican-American War. The county is a part of the Edwards Plateau and Llano Basin region, covering an area of 932 square miles.

Mason County's early settlement mostly comprised of German immigrants who arrived in the 1840s and 1850s. These early settlers were attracted by the abundant land and the opportunity to establish farms and businesses. The region has a rich agricultural history and was majorly involved in the production of cotton, livestock farming, and more recently, deer and turkey hunting.

The county seat, Mason, was initially known as Fort Mason and eventually developed into a thriving community. The town saw progress with the arrival of the railroad in the early 1880s, which facilitated trade and transportation, thus contributing to the growth of local businesses.
