Matagorda County, located along the Texas Gulf Coast, was established in 1836 as one of the original 23 counties in the newly-formed Republic of Texas. It is named after Matagorda Bay, which was discovered and explored during the early Spanish colonial period by Alvar Nunez Cabeza de Vaca in 1528.

The history of Matagorda County began with the Karankawa tribe of Native Americans, who inhabited the coast and barrier islands. The first European settlers arrived in the 1820s, attracted by the offer of land grants from Stephen F. Austin, the father of Texas. The first town, Matagorda, was founded in 1827 and served as an important port for trade with New Orleans and other coastal cities.

During the 19th century, Matagorda County was primarily an agricultural region with plantations producing commodities like cotton and sugar, and cattle ranching dominating the local economy. The county had a significant role during the Texas Revolution and the Civil War, with its prominent location and port infrastructure contributing to the conflicts.

Throughout the 20th century, the county's economy diversified with the expansion of the petrochemical industry, seafood processing, and tourism. The Army, Air Force, and NASA all established facilities around Matagorda County, contributing to population growth in the region. As of the 2020 census, its population reached over 36,000 residents.

A fun fact about Matagorda County is that it is home to the Mad Island Marsh Wildlife Management Area, a 7,300-acre nature preserve that has recorded the highest species count of birds during the annual Christmas Bird Count event multiple times, reflecting the region's rich biodiversity and making it a famous destination for bird watching.
