Maverick County, located in the great state of Texas, was established on September 4, 1856, before that time it was a part of Kinney County. The county is named after Samuel Augustus Maverick, a Texas lawyer, politician, and land baron who is best known for his non-conformist ideals, which later led to the term "maverick" being used to describe unbranded cattle and independent thinkers.

Eagle Pass, the county seat, can trace its history back to prehistoric times when tribes like the Comanche and Apache roamed the area, and the famous Old San Antonio Road crossed the area for trade between Mexico and Texas. Eagle Pass itself was established in 1849 as a trading post along the Rio Grande River and would later serve as a strategic military point during the Mexican-American War and American Civil War.

The county's economy was originally based on cattle ranching and farming, but in the 20th century, its economy diversified and now relies on agriculture, retail trade, manufacturing, and a growing international trade with the nearby Mexican city of Piedras Negras.

A fun fact about Maverick County is that it is home to the endangered black-capped vireo, a small bird known for its distinctive black cap and melodious song. The area hosts one of the largest populations of these rare birds, making it an important destination for bird watchers and wildlife enthusiasts.
