McCulloch County, located in the heart of Texas, was established on January 22, 1856, and later organized on March 1, 1876. Named after Benjamin McCulloch, a prominent figure in the Texas Revolution and a former Confederate general, the county covers an area of about 1,073 square miles.

The earliest inhabitants of McCulloch County were Native American tribes, such as the Apache and Comanche. With the arrival of European settlers, fierce battles ensued between the native tribes and the settlers, leading to the construction of forts by the early pioneers. Fort McKavett and Camp San Saba were established in the mid-1800s to protect the settlers and travelers from native raids.

Brady, the county seat and the self-proclaimed "Heart of Texas," boasts a rich farming and ranching history. The economy of the county initially depended upon cattle, cotton, and corn production, and later shifted to include sheep and goat ranching. The Central Texas Wool and Mohair Center, once located in Brady, processed a significant share of the nation's wool exports, adding to the county's economic importance in the wool industry.

A fun fact about McCulloch County is that it hosts the annual World Championship BBQ Goat Cook-off, held every Labor Day weekend in Brady since 1973. This cook-off is considered one of the largest and most popular such events in Texas, attracting numerous contestants and visitors.
