Menard County, located in the heart of Texas, was established in 1858 and named after the early Texas settler Michel Branamour Menard. The county seat is Menard, which was originally named Menardville. Menard County is part of the Texas Hill Country region and spans an area of approximately 902 square miles.

The area has a rich history dating back to the prehistoric era. Native American tribes, including the Lipan Apache, Comanche, and Kiowa, once inhabited the region. Spanish explorers and missionaries arrived in the 16th century and established a few settlements. In the 1840s, the Anglo-American colonization of the area began.

The construction of the historic San Saba Presidio, now known as Presidio de San Saba, began in 1757. This Spanish fort was built to protect the nearby mission, Santa Cruz de San Saba, which was established to convert the locals to Christianity.

Menard County's economy has mainly been based on agriculture, especially ranching and farming. The primary crops grown here are pecans, oats, and wheat, while sheep, goats, and cattle are also raised. In recent years, hunting has also become an essential part of the local economy.

A fun fact about Menard County is the presence of the "Great Western Cattle Trail," also known as the "Western Trail" or "Dodge City Trail," which crosses through the county. This historic cattle trail was the longest in the United States, stretching from Mexico to Canada. The trail was in use between the 1870s and 1890s and moved millions of cattle from Texas to Kansas, with some cattle even reaching as far as Canada.
