Mills County, located in Central Texas, was established in 1887 from lands previously part of Brown, Comanche, Hamilton, and Lampasas counties. It was named in honor of John T. Mills, a prominent attorney, and judge in the Republic of Texas. The area has a rich historical background, with indigenous tribes, such as the Comanche and Tonkawa, living there before European settlement.

One of the key events in the county's history was the arrival of the Santa Fe Railroad in 1885, which led to a significant increase in population and economic development. Goldthwaite, the county seat, was named after Joseph Goldthwaite, a railroad official, and quickly became a vital trading center. Throughout its history, Mills County has primarily been an agricultural area, with the primary economic activities being farming and ranching. They have produced a variety of crops, such as cotton, pecans, corn, and wheat, and have been involved in the raising of cattle, sheep, goats, and hogs.

A fun fact about Mills County is the establishment of the World War II Prisoner of War Camp in Goldthwaite. This camp housed approximately 500 German prisoners of war, who worked on local farms and shared cultural experiences with the people of Mills County. The impact of the camp can still be seen today, as some of the buildings and foundations remain as a reminder of the wartime history in this region of the USA.
