Mitchell County is located in the great state of Texas and was founded in 1876. It is named in honor of Asa Mitchell and Eli Mitchell, two early settlers and veterans of the Texas Revolution. The county seat is the city of Colorado City, which was founded in 1881 as a railroad town by the Texas and Pacific Railway.

Covering an area of approximately 916 square miles, Mitchell County played a significant role in the development of the West Texas region. Historically, the area was inhabited by several Native American tribes such as the Comanche, Kiowa, and Apache. European Americans began to settle in the region during the late 19th century.

Significant economic development began in Mitchell County after the discovery of oil in the early 20th century. The oil boom attracted thousands of workers and created a demand for infrastructure and public services, ultimately leading to the growth of several smaller communities throughout the area such as Loraine and Westbrook.

Mitchell County has a rich agricultural history as well, with ranching and farming being two major components of the local economy. Cotton and wheat are the main crops grown in the region.

A fun fact about Mitchell County is that it is home to several interesting sites, such as Lake Colorado City State Park, which offers recreational activities including fishing, swimming, and hiking. Also, Colorado City hosts an annual "Christmas in the Park" event that includes a display of holiday lights throughout Ruddick Park, attracting visitors from all over the region.
