Montgomery County is located in the southeastern part of Texas and is part of the Houston-The Woodlands-Sugar Land metropolitan area. Established on December 14, 1837, it was named after the town of Montgomery, which was in turn named after the United States Navy officer Andrew Montgomery. The county has a rich history dating back to the early days of Texas, and its roots are deeply embedded in the area's pre-Texas Revolution and Republic of Texas periods.

The area that now constitutes Montgomery County was originally inhabited by Native American tribes such as the Bidai, Coushatta, and Atakapa. European settlements began to emerge in the early 1820s, when the first Anglo-American settlers arrived under the Mexican colonization laws. Stephen F. Austin, widely known as the "Father of Texas," played a significant role in attracting settlers to this region.

One of the key historical events in Montgomery County is the Texas Declaration of Independence, which was signed on March 2, 1836, in the midst of the Texas Revolution against Mexico. The city of Montgomery played a crucial role in the early days of the revolution, as it was a hub for many political activities and gatherings related to the formation of the Republic of Texas. Due to its political importance during the revolution, Montgomery County later became one of the original Texas counties when the Republic of Texas was formed.

Throughout the years, Montgomery County has experienced growth and development, thanks to expanding transportation networks, the discovery of oil, and the resulting economic booms. Today, it is a thriving community with a diverse economy and is an attractive destination for businesses and residents alike.

Fun Fact: The Lone Star Flag, the current official flag of Texas, was designed by Dr. Charles B. Stewart of Montgomery and presented at the Convention of 1836, which ultimately led to Texas' independence. As a result, the city of Montgomery is often referred to as the "Birthplace of the Texas Lone Star Flag."
